How to Remove Oil Stains from Concrete Floors

Despite their durability, polished concrete floors can be marred by oil stains. From garage spills to kitchen mishaps, we'll show you how to remove them effectively.

Identifying the Stain

Before you begin cleaning, it's crucial to identify the type of oil stain. Different oils (motor, cooking, etc.) and the stain's age will influence the best removal approach. An old, set-in motor oil stain will require a more aggressive method than a fresh cooking oil spill.

Safety

  • Always wear protective gloves and eye protection when working with cleaning solutions.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation, especially when using chemical cleaners.
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area.

Step-by-Step Removing Oil Stains from Polished Concrete Floors

Oil stains can be particularly tricky. Here are a few options for removing an oil stain:
  1. Fresh Oil Stains - Absorbent Materials:

    1. Immediately blot up as much oil as possible with paper towels or rags for fresh spills.
    2. Cover the stain with an absorbent material such as kitty litter, cornstarch, or diatomaceous earth.
    3. Allow the material to sit for several hours or overnight, allowing it to draw out the oil
    4. Sweep up the absorbent material and dispose of it properly.
  2. Light Stains - Gentle Cleaning Solutions:

    1. Mix a mild dish soap with warm water.
    2. Using a soft cloth or sponge, gently scrub the stained area.
    3. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry with a clean cloth
  3. Stubborn Stains - Chemical Cleaners:

    1. For tougher stains, use a highly concentrated degreasing product, such as Citra Pro degreaser, to help you emulsify the oil.
    2. Spray on the cleaner and allow it to penetrate
    3. For heavy accumulations, scrub with a stiff brush
    4. Wipe off the soil or flush it off with a strong spray of water
    5. If there is a topical polished concrete guard product on the floor, this may need to be reapplied. This would help you restore the original look.
  4. Deep Set in Stains - Poultice:

    • For deeply embedded stains, create a poultice by mixing an absorbent material, such as diatomaceous earth, with a solvent, like mineral spirits or acetone.
    • Apply the poultice to the stain, creating a layer about ¼ inch thick.
    • Cover the poultice with plastic wrap and allow it to sit for 24-48 hours.
    • Remove the poultice and sweep up the residue.
    • Clean the area with a mild dish soap solution.

Post-Cleaning Care and Maintenance

  • Sealing and Protecting: Consider applying a concrete sealer to protect against future stains.
  • Long-Term Maintenance Tips: Regular cleaning and prompt spill cleanup are essential.
Polished concrete's durability is undeniable. With proper care, including effective oil stain removal, your floors will retain their pristine, modern aesthetic for years to come.
