No-Grind WB Urethane Clear Coating System
Welcome to the “No-Grind” WB Urethane Clear Coating System from Concrete Floor Supply. While this system is specifically designed so that you do not have to rent a heavy, expensive concrete grinder, the reality of any floor coating is simple: the more prep you do, the better your long-term bond will be.
Ideally, the concrete should have a light CSP 1 -2 (Concrete Surface Profile), but we have seen customers achieve great results with little to no mechanical prep at all. Ultimately, the level of preparation you choose is completely up to you.
1. Surface Preparation (Your Choice)
Regardless of the method you choose, your floor must be completely clean, dry, and entirely free from old sealers, dirt, oils, glues, and other contaminants.
Here are a few methods for preparing your concrete, ranked from good to best:
- Good (Minimal Prep): Scrub and/or power wash the floor with a high-quality degreaser.
- Better: Use our Super Blue liquid floor prep followed by a thorough clean water rinse.
- Even Better: Use a black pad on a low-speed floor buffer with water and a degreaser. Flush completely with clean water.
- Best (Our Recommended “No-Grind” Method): Use our Concrete DNA Satellite Pad (30 grit).
- Traditional (Maximum Adhesion): Grind dry using a lower grit (80 to 120 grit) metal bond diamond tool on a 3-headed planetary grinder equipped with a vacuum.
Crucial Moisture Note: If you utilize water during your prep using any of the methods above, you must allow the floor to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before applying the WB Urethane.
2. Application: First Coat
- Mix: Prepare the WB Urethane Gloss using a drill mixer. (Always refer to the specific product data sheet for exact mixing times and instructions) This product hangs out well in a bucket and kicks over when applied to the floor.
- Apply: You can apply the product by dipping and rolling out of a paint pan, or by pouring it in ribbons directly onto the floor and spreading it evenly as you go.
- Spread: Immediately spread the product to an “even milk” look using an 18”, ⅜” nap roller. This product goes on white but will dry perfectly clear.
- Do Not Over-Roll: Get even coverage on the floor quickly to avoid leaving roller marks, then leave it alone.
- Coverage: Expect an application rate of roughly 400 sq. ft. per gallon.
3. Application: Second Coat & Traction
- Timing is Key: Apply your second coat once the first coat is sufficiently dry.
- The 12-Hour Rule: If you exceed the maximum re-coat window of 12 hours, you must screen the first coat with a 220 (or coarser) screen on a buffer and wipe it perfectly clean to ensure the second coat bonds properly.
- Apply Second Coat: Repeat the exact same mixing and rolling process used for the first coat.
- Add Traction (Optional but Recommended): If you desire slip resistance, broadcast our Grip X (100 grit) or Wear Pack (220 grit) into this final coat. Pro-tip: Test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure you like the feel and grip size.
- Cure Time: Protect the coated area from all foot and vehicle traffic until the coating has sufficiently dried. (Refer to the product data sheet for exact dry times).

-
Q:Can you broadcast flakes into WB Urethane Gloss?A: Yes, WB Urethane Gloss can accept partial broadcasts of flakes. We have pigment packs so you can easily:
- Pigment your base-coat of WB Urethane
- Broadcast your flake
- Clear coat with WB Urethane (unpigmented)
This system has extremely high bond strength and durability and will outperform the big box store stuff by a long shot.
-
Q:How long will Urethane Gloss hang out in the bucket?A: This product has a great pot life and will last in the bucket for up to 45 minutes.
-
Q:What is the best product to go over an existing Rustoleum garage epoxy?A: First, you’re only as good as what you go on top of, so keep that in mind. Compromised floors should be ground and removed. From what we hear on a daily basis, you would be best to never put down a big box store floor coating (like Rustoleum) at all.
However, if you have one down and you just want to “go over it,” our WB Urethane Gloss is a great option. It has unbelievable adhesion and can be pigmented gray or left clear.
- Prep Recommendation: Do a thorough cleaning prior.
- Sanding Recommendation: Use a dry sand screen with around a 100 or higher grit screen prior to coating to ensure maximum bond.
-
Q:What is the best top coat for a metallic floor?A: Our Urethane Gloss/Matte is the most common top-coat for a metallic epoxy floor coating. With great durability and adhesion, this product does exceptionally well as a protective top coat over metallics.
-
Q:Can Urethane Gloss be applied over radiant heat?A: Yes! It is very common with shop-style homes where they want a “concrete look” and have radiant heat.
- Important: Do not have the radiant heat system on during install or curing.
- Our Water Based Clear system, which features Urethane Gloss, is one of the most popular systems for this exact setup.
- Customizable: You don’t have to apply this product clear; it can easily be pigmented to match your space.
