PRODUCT FAQ's
Epoxy flakes, sometimes called color chips or vinyl chips, are decorative pieces you broadcast into a wet base coat to add color, texture, and slip resistance to your concrete floor. They come in a wide range of color blends and get sealed under a clear topcoat for a durable, professional-looking finish. They're one of the most popular ways to transform a garage, basement, or commercial space.
Pros: Flake floors hide concrete imperfections, add slip resistance, are easy to clean, and come in dozens of color blends. They work great in garages, shops, schools, retail stores, kennels, and more.
Cons: Surface prep is critical; skipping the grind or moisture test can lead to peeling. Full-broadcast flake floors also require more material and a helper for larger areas than a solid-color system. Temperature and humidity affect cure times, so plan accordingly.
Flakes vary in color and quantity. For a complete flake floor system including base coat, flakes, and topcoat, our Pro One Day Flake Kit starts at $1,054 for up to 600 sq ft, with larger sizes available up to 3,000 sq ft. Buying a kit is the most cost-effective way to get everything you need in one box.
A properly installed flake floor can last 10–20+ years, depending on traffic, maintenance, and the products used. The topcoat makes the biggest difference — polyaspartic topcoats like our Poly 90 are UV-stable, chemical-resistant, and hold up to hot-tire pickup far longer than a basic epoxy clear coat. Keeping dirt and abrasives swept up is probably the most important thing you can do to extend your floor's life.
Most decorative floor flakes are made from pigmented vinyl. They're lightweight, UV stable, and designed to bond with epoxy, polyaspartic, and polyurea coatings. Our flakes are random-shaped and 1/4" in size for optimal coverage and appearance.
After applying your base coat, grab a handful of flakes and toss them upward and outward from about shoulder height, letting them fall randomly into the wet coating. Work from the back of the floor toward the front. Do multiple light broadcasts until you get full coverage — don't try to get 100% in one pass. After the base coat cures, scrape any loose or vertical flakes with a flat floor scraper, vacuum clean, and apply your clear topcoat. Check out our full step-by-step epoxy flake installation guide for the complete process.
For full-broadcast coverage, use 12% of your floor's square footage in pounds. So a 600 sq ft floor needs about 72 lbs, and a 900 sq ft floor needs about 90 lbs. Never short yourself on ordering flake; running short mid-project means waiting for more material and recoating, which adds time and cost. Use our epoxy flake calculator to figure out exactly what you need.
Our Polybase 98 and Poly 90 are the two most popular products to broadcast flake into. You can also use our Epoxy Flow 100 product lines. Polybase 98 is designed for one-day flake systems with a fast cure, while Epoxy Flow 100 gives you maximum work time on the floor — great for beginners or larger areas.
